The wind whistles in my ears – again – and keeps my hair dancing in the air. Although we left the beach and drove more into the mainland and the sun is shining bright, it keeps me shuddering from time to time and tears of the hat from my head so that I have to hop clumsy through the colorful tulip fields to catch it again.
Holland is flat as a pancake and you’ll notice it easily, nevertheless I always love to come back – one month ago, it was the first time during the flower season and girls, I can only recommend it! The colorful flower fields are a true glory and they’re so easy to combine with a trip to the beach AND to Amsterdam. So here’s the perfect travel guide:
1. The most important thing first: If you want to see the flower fields, you have to go between the middle of March until the end of May because that’s the blooming period. I’ve been there in the middle of April and all of the fields (not only the tulips) were in full blossom. By the way, did you know the flowers are just planted for the bulb and the fields get scythed afterwards?

Ich war Mitte April da, und Tulpen, als auch die anderen Blumen auf den Feldern, haben alle wunderbar geblüht. Wusstet ihr übrigens, dass die Blumenfelder tatsächlich nur wegen der Blumenzwiebeln angepflanzt werden, die dann verkauft werden und die schönen Blumen einfach abgemäht werden? So jetzt geht die Reise aber los:
2. Rent a car WITH a navigation device.
The very best idea is to check several booking platforms to compare the prices and you should also make sure to choose a supplier with a car park right at the airport. There are some suppliers where you have to take a shuttle bus to get to the car park – less practical. Furthermore you should use the credit card of the driver if possible, otherwise you’ll have to pay an extra for an additional driver. It’s not a lot but hey, when you can save, do it.3. Rent an affordable accommodation near the beach. I suggest a place around Noordwijk where we stayed and rented a little apartment. It takes only 25 minutes to get there from the airport by car. Just one little tip: Double check if the place you choose is kind of a holiday home where people always bring everything with them if they stay there. Be got one like this and there was no toilet paper or shower towels ;)
4. From the apartment, you’ll reach the beach with the car very easily in less then 5 minutes. The crazy thing is that the part between the beach and the “normal” mainland are big dunes (photo story will follow on Sunday) and while driving through them you feel like you’re in Cali. It’s incredible.
5. There’s a restaurant at the beach called Nederzandt where you can have amazing dinner (and Wi-Fi). The prices are quite high but it’s a foodie paradise and a very cozy place so it was worth every cent.
6. If you head to the beach in the afternoon, take a towel with you, sit down in the sand and wait until the sunset. It’s a crazy beautiful spectacle. Unfortunately the sea is too cold to swim – except if you’re tougher then me.
7. With the rental car you’ll also reach the notorious tulips feels the country is knows for very easily, the area is called “Bollenstreek” (meaning: flower bulb growing area) and is placed between Noordwijkerhout and Lissen where you’ll also find the flower park called «Keukenhof». The park is usually full of tourists so I’d rather suggest you to either rent a bike and cycle through the flower fields on your own or stick to one of the tulips field cycle tours. Don’t forget to stop along and take some photos for Instagram. ;)
8. For your onward journey to Amsterdam there are two possibilities. Either you take your rental car and drive directly to the hotel in Amsterdam (we stayed in the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel) – be aware that you may have to pay for the parking in the hotel. Therefor and because of the bustling traffic in the city, I suggest to continue the journey like we did and rather return the rental car at the airport and then taking a taxi from the airport to the hotel. Please include enough money for the taxi drive as the airport only allows Tesla taxis which are an amazing experience to drive with but are not that cheap.
9. Look for a hotel in the City Centre because this way you don’t have to take taxis or the public transport anymore as you’ll reach most of the things by feet or you rent a bike to be faster.
10. The coolest and most popular district to go shopping are the so called ” Nine Streets” between the Prinsengracht and the Herengracht. You’ll find many cute boutiques here and I can especially recommend the lingerie brand “Love Stories”, where I left €500. BUT, the brand is Dutch, so let’s see it as a perfect accessory. If you want to splurge, head to the shopping centre «de Bijenkorf».
11. For the way back to the airport just take another taxi. Have a save flight home!
Der Wind pfeift um die Ohren – schon wieder – und verweht meine Haare. Obwohl ich doch gar nicht mehr am Strand, sondern mit dem Auto weiter ins Innere des Landes gefahren bin, holte er mich ein und lässt mich trotz strahlendem Sonnenschein immer wieder ein bisschen erschaudern und reisst mir ab und an den Strohhut vom Kopf, sodass ich tollpatschig durch die farbenfrohen Tulpenfelder hüpfe um ihn mir immer wieder zu holen.
Das Holland flach wie eine Flunder ist, ist definitiv spürbar und trotzdem komme ich immer wieder gerne her – vor einem Monat zum ersten Mal zur Blütensaison und Mädels, ich kann es euch nur ans Herz legen. Die farbenfrohen Felder sind wahrlich ein Pracht und lassen sich perfekt mit einem Trip an den Strand UND nach Amsterdam verbinden. Deshalb hier eine Art kleiner Travel Guide:

2. Mietet ein Auto MIT Navigationssystem! Am Besten im Voraus über eine Buchungsplattform (vergleicht die Preise!) bei einem Anbieter, dessen Carpark auch wirklich direkt am Flughafen ist. Es gibt welche, da müsst ihr erst mit einem Shuttlebus hin – unpraktisch! Gebt wenn möglich die Kreditkarte des Fahrers an, ansonsten müsst ihr Mehrkosten für einen Zweitfahrer zahlen. Das ist zwar ein kleiner Betrag, aber wenn man sich den sparen kann, umso besser.
3. Mietet euch für wenige Tage eine günstige Unterkunft in der Nähe des Strandes. Wir haben uns für das Örtchen Noordwijk entschieden und dort ein kleines Appartment gemietet. Vom Flughafen dahin geht’s auch nur 25 Minuten mit dem Auto. Ein kleiner Tipp: Checkt vorher ab, ob es eine Art Ferienhaus ist, wo man alles selber mitnehmen muss, das ist da verbreitet. Wir haben so eine erwischt und hatten weder Klopapier noch Duschtücher. ;)
4. Vom Apartment aus kommt ihr mit dem Auto total easy in 5 Minuten zum Strand. Das krasse ist, das zwischen dem Strand und dem «normalen» Festland riesige Dünen (Fotos folgen am Sonntag!) liegen und man beim Durchfahren echt denkt, man fahre gerade durch die Wüste Kalifornien, ehrlich, das ist so crazy!
5. Am Strand gibt’s dieses Nederzandt Restaurant, da gibt’s richtig gutes Essen (und gutes Wi-Fi). Die Preise sind zwar nicht ganz günstig, aber sind es auf jeden Fall wert – auch die Atmosphere da ist super gemütlich.
6. Nimm ein Tuch mit zum Strand, setzt dich in den Sand und bleib unbedingt bis zum Sonnenuntergang da. Ein wahnsinnig schönes Spektakel. Nur das Meer ist noch zu kalt zu baden – es sei denn, du bist etwas härter im nehmen als ich.
7. Mit dem Mietwagen kommt ihr ebenfalls schnell und einfach zu den berühmt-berüchtigten Tulpenfeldern, dem sogenannten «Bollenstreek» (Blumenzwiebel-Anbaugebiet). Dieser liegt zwischen Noordwijkerhout und Lissen, wo sich auch der Blumenpark «Keukenhof» befindet. Da dieser aber immer voll mit Touristen ist, empfehle ich euch hier stattdessen entweder einfach ein Fahrrad zu mieten und auf eigene Faust loszuradeln oder euch einer Tulpenfelder-Tour anzuschliessen. Nicht vergessen anzuhalten und ein paar Instagram Fotos zu schiessen ;)
8. Zur Weiterreise nach Amsterdam gibt es zwei Möglichkeiten. Entweder ihr fahrt mit dem Mietwagen direkt in die Stadt zum Hotel, dass ihr euch da bucht (wir waren im DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel) – dann müsst ihr aber evtl. den Parkplatz im Hotel noch dazubezahlen. Darum und wegen des mühsamen Verkehrs in der Stadt, empfehle ich euch jedoch, den Mietwagen wieder am Flughafen abzugeben und euch dann mit dem Taxi in die Stadt zum Hotel fahren zu lassen. Rechnet aber genug Geld für die Taxifahrt ein, da vom Flughafen aus nur noch Tesla-Taxis fahren dürfen – die sind wahnsinnig toll und ein schönes Erlebnis aber halt auch nicht gerade günstig.
9. Schau, das sich dein Hotel im Zentrum der Stadt befindet, dann brauchst du den Rest des Aufenthalts nämlich kein Taxi und kein ÖV mehr zu benutzen, sondern kannst alles wichtige zu Fuss erreichen oder auch empfehlenswert: ein Fahrrad mieten.
10. Der coolste und beliebstese Stadtteil zum Shoppen sind die sogenannten «Nine Streets» zwischen der Prinsengracht und der Herengracht. Da findest du jede Menge schöner Boutique. Besonders ans Herz legen kann ich die Unterwäschemarke «Love Stories», da habe ich ganze €500 liegen gelassen. ABER, die Marke ist aus Holland, also ein perfektes Accessoire. Wer sich ein Luxusteil gönnen will, wird im Einkaufszentrum «de Bijenkorf» fündig.
11. Für den Rückweg zum Flughafen einfach wieder ein Taxi nehmen. Guten Rückflug!
